I've been wondering about this lately. Is the colour of someone's fur, based on the fur colour of his/her parents? Just like eye or hair colour, or how it is in animals in the real world?

We haven't seen much that might answer that question. Red and his father have the same fur colour. Mary is a lighter shade of blue that Simon, though. If her fur is the mix of what her parents' fur colours are, does that mean that Mary's mother is either white or light blue?

Probably...but then again most animals of the same species, and the same subspecies carry the same fur color.

That's a pretty intriguing idea. I would venture that fur color is hereditary; however, as with everything else, you could get those weird off-shoots that occasionally happen. So a pair of white-furred sheep could have a black-sheep lamb.

Something to think about, most fur color is actually a blend. The tip of the fur/hair is one color, while the body of the fur/hair is a different color. For example, common mice are a "brown", but "brown"-mice fur isn't fully brown. It's like a blend of brown, red, black and yellow. This is mostly due to incomplete dominance in fur pigmentation. OH! An interesting illustration of this would be a black-hooded mouse, where the black pigment is over-produced in the head area, making the mouse look like it has a "hood" on. Anyway, that's a pretty neat question, Symphony. ))

It's an interesting idea, but I'd actually like to think fur color can be a little more independent. This has less to do with any form of scientific basis so much as from a customization point-of-view. There are already rules in place as to species restrictions for fursonas, and unique color schemes being so "rare" wouldn't be a valid argument considering how many of them we would see in Bon Bon.

Traditionally, I would agree that the fur color should be more genetically inherited, but when it comes to the custom fursona, I can't in good conscious want to take that stance, as it would feel like some kind of further restriction and stifle creativity in the creation of a fursona.

i never really consired this kinda like my fursona despite the fact my fursona has sopts and then the three black stripes going down his back his mother and farther where both cheetahs

it is acutly in fact a rear gebntic mutaion in his DNA that resulted in him being born a king cheetah witxh are very very rear

a long time back when fur of this species was discoverd scintes first belived it was a hybrid mix of a cheetah and leopard but was proved wrong

I don't think it needs to be restrictive when creating fursonas. People usually don't talk about how their fursona's parents look like.

I just find it interesting to speculate on. Kind of a special furry aspect, just like how different species can't produce offspring, how females can only become pregnant when in heat and so on.

Actually Caroline, I know it as Red vs Blue too.

As far as fur color and bloodline, I had Labrn and Mystic's colors reversed from their parents. The father being black fur, the mother being white fur. A nod toward darwin I believe.

Well... apparently then you aren't a big fan of Caboose. Who, other than one time, refers to the conflict as "Blue vs. Red." In addition, he even scolds Agent Washington about the mistake... so... um... yeah. Me and my lameness.

Anyway, back on topic, for me, while I can see the pull/allure of alternative colors... they also can be annoyingly distracting. To me, it... takes a careful balance to use non-realistic colors on humanoid-animals without making them look eye-wincingly cringe-inducing. If that makes any sense.

To use Shadow_Twisted as an example. I do like the red-black color combination normally, being a goth we kinda half too, otherwise our goth-card gets revoked... however, for me, it just doesn't seem to translate well into a fur color. Whereas, the milk-chocolate-brown color of Constance Mayflower I like very much. So... *shrug* some unusual colors, while potentially making the character unique, can also be off-putting to me.))

Haven't really thought about fur color, even though Arcanus's parents, brother, and grandparents are in the story. They would probably be different shades of blue, the only reason Arcanus is blue and black is because he got badly burned. But that is a very good question Symphony.
