name a hollywood movie that doesn't have a shite ending....
they're all designed for feelgood, not for reality.
and they all have a "moral of this story" type speech somewhere near the end. So pointless.
So when i said its a great movie, I guess that means I've learned to shut crap endings out of my memory...

Empire Strikes Back. Chasing Amy. American Beauty. A Better Place. El Mariachi. Fallen. Just to name a few. All these movies ended on either a downer or with an ending that wasn't "feel good". Though I do agree with your assessment of "Samurai". Great movie with a cookie-cutter ending. _________________ "Women are like Voltron. The more you hook up, the better it gets." |

i wasnt referring to the speech, i was reffering to [spoliers ahead] the part where only them two survive the hail of gun fire, and then he survives long enough to kill himself, then only tom cruise left alive!!!! |

You can tell me how it ends ... I'm not gonna see it. Not my type of movie (assuming you're talking about the Tom Cruise movie, right?).
Ok, tell me what happens. I'm dying to know now.

Off the top of my head...
Casablanca. Gone with the Wind. Citizen Kane. The Godfather. Taxi Driver. Apocalypse Now. The Deer Hunter. The Usual Suspects. Annie Hall. Vertigo. Memento. Pulp Fiction. Blue Velvet. The Wild Bunch. Seven. The Maltese Falcon. Sunset Boulevard. Chinatown. Easy Rider. The Searchers.
None of those have conventional happy endings.
In fact, if you really think about it, the films that people really consider to be classics seldom have happy endings.
Even ET goes home at the end.

Not true Dave, what about "Meet John Doe", "It's A Wonderful Life" (both Frank Capra movies with happy endings).
However, you did leave out another classic with sad ending, and one of my very favorite movies of all time .. "Doctor Zhivago".

Lawrence of Arabia...in two senses, i think. If you consider that the chronological end of the movie was at the beginning, you have one sad ending. If you go by the end of the film, you have yet another depressing finale. Yikes. Two less-than-happy endings for one film?! Say it ain't so!
For those of you who haven't seen it, it starts at the very end of Lawrence's life and then tells the story of his accomplishments as a sort of eulogy. So, to breathe new life into the sappy Last Samurai ending...
First we find out how he died. Then, we are told how he lived.

There is a school of thought that says that It's a Wonderful Life has an ambiguous ending... A critic called David Thomson wrote a very persuasive argument that, at the end of the movie, although George Bailey is happily reunited with his family, he has simply conformed into a lifestyle he hates.
But I take your point...
I just think that Hollywood sometimes gets an unfair rap for always giving their movies cheesy endings and it isn't really true. And, in general, unhappy endings tend to be more memorable. I mean, Dr Zhivago would have really sucked if Zhivago had jumped off the bus, grabbed Lara and they waltzed off into the sunset!

Not to harp on the same subject forever ... But I just watched "Meet John Doe" for the first time in many, many years. I loved the message of that movie, and in today's world it kinda made me wish such a thing were possible today ... Loving your neighbors, and everyone pitching in to help each other with love and compassion. If only such a ideal could come to fruition across the globe ... Wow!
Rich
P.S.
Yeah, but the great message from It's A Wonderful Life is that Bailey always helped those who needed help the most ... And when the chips were down for him all those hundreds of people he'd done little things for during his life, all pulled together to collect all the money he needed to pay the bank back for the money his feeble minded uncle had lost.
What goes around, comes around ... Even though that saying usually refers to bad deeds, I believe it works with good deeds also - And "It's A Wonderful Life" apparently agrees with me (LOL). _________________ Uncle Pepe is da bomb! |

What kind of movies do you prefer, Jana? Current stuff, classics, or are you open to all things? Adventure? Historical? Comedy? Romance?
If you want referrals for many of the big classic (nostalgic) greats, apparently Dave T and I are familiar with most of them, and can recommend a few. I, myself am a big movie buff, and love movies from the 1930's up until more modern movies of today (although in the past couple years I've only watch maybe a dozen movies - I've been to busy for movies, but I still love them just the same).

Oh, action-romance. Have you ever seen "Romancing The Stone" with Michael Douglas, Kathleen Turner and Danny Devito? Now that movie had action, romance and comedy all rolled into one! There was also a sequel "Jewel of the Nile" that was almost just a good.

Both great movies, so was War of the Roses. Did you know that movie had one of the highest bugets of its time? Everthing they destroyed was authentic! Even the Rolls Royce. I thought that was a bit excessive, but it made for a great movie. _________________ Life without a friend is like a boob without a nipple...It's pointless. |

Yeah, War of the Roses was kinda cute. My favorite part was with the kids. Remember when Kathleen's character was always giving the kids candy, and Michael would say, "don't give them so much candy, they will get fat" ... Then suddenly the movie gets to "current" times, and the kids are now teenagers and come into the room to say "goodnight", and they are both fat. I laughed my ass off with that scene.
I didn't know about the budget, and the destruction of real things. But I can say, my ex-wife was a bit like those two ... She'd cut off her nose to spite her face! But I guess it worked ... I gave her the house in the divorce because if we fought over it, the lawyers would have gotten it, so I figured I'll just sign it over to her (but I made her put the deed in her name AND our daughters - She at least agreed to that).

Be careful, guys! Remember that videos and dvds operate in different formats in the US and Europe. Check that your video and dvd players are multi-region models or the movies won't play. If you need any advice on different formats let me know.

Yeah, no problem Jana, I have them both on VHS, and will be happy to send them (I probably also have them on DVD, and if not, I will soon as I am replacing all my VHS movies with DVD ones).

I knew DVD's had regional codes, but I wasn't aware that VHS did ?? Well, we'll see. If you cannot rent them, I'll send them anyway, and hope they play on your VHS player. _________________ Uncle Pepe is da bomb! |

Hi Rich
VHS is, on the whole, more of a problem than dvd.
The US uses a system called NTSC. Most of Europe uses a system called SECAM – although I have just checked and discovered that some parts of the Czech Republic use SECAM and others use a third system called PAL, which is the same system used in the UK.
You can check which system your region uses here: www.photo2video.co.uk/Video_Standards.htm
Anyway, the annoying thing is that all 3 systems are incompatible. If you try to play an NTSC tape on a SECAM or PAL recorder and vice versa, you just get a blank screen.
So unless Jana has a multi-region video recorder, which allows you to switch from one system to another, she won't be able to watch American VHS tapes.
The same problem arises with dvd. The US is region 1, Europe is region 2, Asia is (mainly) region 3 etc and the systems aren't compatible, with the exception of anything marked region 0 which is 'all regions'.
However, every dvd player can be be customised to become a multi-region player. It's a five minute job for a TV technician. Ask them to convert your player to be multi-region and they can open it up and simply switch off the device which limits the player to a single region. It's absurdly easy! There is a company in the UK which even advertises the fact that it supplies dvd players already customised to play all regions at no extra charge - you don't even have to ask them to do it!
If I could make a suggestion to Rich: hold fire while Jana checks whether her VHS is SECAM or PAL (it should say on the front of the machine somewhere which system it uses). If it's PAL, I can get copies of the films in the UK and send them to her and they should play fine on her system. If it's SECAM, then neither of us can send her tapes cos they won't play.
On the other hand, if Jana can get her dvd player converted into a multi-region player (if she hasn't done so already) then it would make more sense to send dvds. Because they are much lighter and tougher, they are cheaper and safer to send through the mail. Once again, the other alternative is that I can send Jana region 2 discs from the UK and they should play fine on her system as it stands.
One other thing, Rich... If you do send Jana some dvds, send them individually and not in one big box or she will get stung for import tax. A single dvd won't be expensive enough to cross the tax threshold, but two or more will have duty levied on them. And, take it from me, it can be a pretty hefty charge!
I always seem to end up writing these massive posts to the site. Sorry to ramble on at length. Anyway, I hope this info has been of some use.

you can find hacks for a lot of dvd players at www.vcdhelp.com Just search for your dvd make and model.
i've found multi region hacks for all 4 dvd players i've had from there. The hacks are simple it usually involves something like press open tray button then type in 874636 or whatever then close tray button, then you are given the option of which region you would like to set your dvd to, e.g. 1,2,3 or 0 (0 being to make it region free i.e. play PAL SECAM NTSC)
As for Video a lot of UK videos these days support NTSC (american format) it'll say in users manual if your particular player supports other formats.
The difference between regions in case your wondering is to do with how many frames per second and how many lines of picture information.
hope that helps. |
